Fabiano Ventura - Photographer and scientific explorer

Photographer - Scientific explorer

<<My aim is to convey how important it is to know and respect nature, not only to be able to enjoy its beauty, but also to preserve ourselves as a species and as a civilization.>>

An artist of extraordinary talent capable of immortalizing the dichotomous reality of yesterday and today in his photographs.

Sensitivity, intelligence and dedication.

Biografia

Born in Rome in 1975, Fabiano is a professional photographer specializing in environmental issues and landscape and mountain photography.

Always deeply attached to the mountains in every aspect, grown up traveling and learning to love nature, he combines his profession as a photographer with the practice of mountaineering, sport climbing and ski mountaineering.

Organizer and protagonist of numerous scientific, photographic and mountaineering expeditions, in the wildest and most inaccessible places on Earth.

In 2004 I accompanied the Italian mountaineering-scientific expedition “K2 2004 - 50 years later” as official photographer, reaching an altitude of 7,000 m; in 2005 he follows the expedition of Hans Kammerlander and Karl Unterkircher in Nepal with the two climbers attempting to reach the unclimbed summit of Mount Jasemba (7,352 m.).

Over the years he has made reportages in Nepal, Pakistan, India, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Namibia, Algeria, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, Georgia and Iceland and boasts collaborations with several internationally renowned mountain guides and mountaineers including Reinhold Messner, Erri De Luca, Stephan Siegrist, Ines Papert, Agostino Da Polenza, Silvio Mondinelli.

His photographs are capable of representing nature in its most extreme and wild aspects, and of documenting the consequences of the interaction between human activities and the environment.

Carriera

In 2007 an ambitious project was born, entitled " On the Trail of the Glaciers " , which through various expeditions to the main mountain ranges del Pianeta combines scientific research and awareness on the theme of climate change and that sees Fabiano engaged body and soul in this mammoth photographic comparison work based on the use of the Repeat Photography technique.

The goal is to take photographs of the great glaciers of the planet from the same perspectives from which, a hundred or more years ago, the pioneers of mountain photography took evocative shots of the glacial masses. An operation that allows us to compare how the glacier has evolved over the course of a century, how its appearance has changed, what has been the loss of mass due to climate change.

Thanks to the comparison of historical and modern images combined with field measurements, the International Scientific Committee of the project is able to analyze the health status of the largest glaciers on the planet, precious indicators for the evaluation of the current climatic conditions and, above all, of their evolution over time.

The first four expeditions took place in Karakorum ( 2009 ), Caucasus ( 2011 ), Alaska ( 2013 ) and in the Andes ( 2016 ), achieving all the set goals, including repeat photography < / em> of the historical images, the GPS recording of the shooting points and the glaciological measurements made by the researchers who participated in the expeditions. The four missions have produced a considerable amount of scientific information, as well as photographic and cinematographic material that has allowed the creation of exhibitions, conferences, publications, and three television documentaries distributed on major international broadcasters (ZDF, ARTE ' , RAI, RTSI, NHK).

A fifth expedition took place on the Himalaya in the summer of 2018. A sixth expedition is planned to the Alps in 2020.

Fabiano recorded great numbers: 5 expeditions completed, 108 comparative photographs, 7 research projects carried out and 35 glaciers analyzed.
